Build steps
Cut four legs from one 4x4 and the rails from the 2x4s. Screw the rails around the tops of the legs so the top of the frame is flush with the leg tops.
Screw the cross-bar in the middle and the plywood top on every 6 in.
Set the stand on a level pad of 4 in compacted gravel or four pavers, in the shade under the downspout.
Set the barrel on the stand and fit the spigot 3 in from the bottom.
Add a screen over the top, and an overflow pipe that goes away from the house.
Before you start
A full 55 gal barrel weighs about 460 lb. Do not stack it on anything not built for the load, and keep the ground under it level and hard.
At 24 in the spigot clears a 5 gal bucket and gives the hose some head. For more pressure, raise it.
Screen the top against mosquitoes and leaves. Drain it before a freeze.
Do not drink the water. Use food-safe barrels for the garden.
