Build steps

  1. Pick a high, well-drained site. Level a pad 2 ft wider than the building all round and spread 4 in of compacted gravel. Check square by measuring both diagonals.
  2. Lay the ground-contact 2x6 sill flat round the perimeter, in joined lengths with the joints over the studs, and anchor it with stakes or rebar.
  3. Frame the walls flat on the sill: a pressure-treated bottom plate, studs 24 in on center, headers over the door, windows and pop doors, and a top plate. Stand them and screw the corners together.
  4. Cut the rafters with plumb cuts at 14° and set them in pairs on the walls, screwed to the ridge board, 24 in on center, with a 2x4 tie across every second pair.
  5. Screw on the roof deck in pieces joined on the rafters, and then the 20 metal panels, lapping one rib.
  6. Cut the siding from the sheet layouts and screw it on every 6 in, with joints on studs. Each window cutout is kept as its shutter, hinged at the top.
  7. Staple hardware cloth behind every window and vent from inside, and hang the human door on three heavy hinges with a hasp.
  8. Screw the roost bars flat across the building, 5 of them at 36 in, on cleats screwed to the studs, with a post under every splice.
  9. Lay a hardware cloth apron flat round the outside, 24 in wide, stapled to the sill and covered with soil. Add a nest box bank on one wall and a run at a pop door.
  10. Dirt or sand makes the floor. Rake out the droppings under the roosts once a week or use deep litter.
