Build steps
Mark six post positions, three each side, 8 ft apart across and 5 ft 4 in apart along, and check square. Dig each hole 12 in deep.
Set the 4x4 posts plumb in gravel or concrete, tops 80 in above the ground.
Bolt the two 2x6 beam boards to the outside and the inside of the post tops on each side, with 1/2 in carriage bolts.
Screw the 2x4 rafters on edge across the beams every 16 in, with 12 in overhanging each side.
Lay two 16 ft cattle panels, cut to 11 ft 8 in, flat across the rafters and wire them down every 12 in. Train the vines up a post and along the panels.
Before you start
Grapes need a trellis that carries 40 to 50 lb of vine and fruit per plant. Panels laid flat give the cane something to grab.
The 6 ft 8 in clearance suits a walk-under arbor; plant one vine at each corner post, about 8 ft apart.
The beams are 11 ft; use 4 in carriage bolts and check them each spring.
