Build steps
Mark the 7 post positions and check square by measuring both diagonals. Dig each hole 18 in deep.
Cut the posts to length from the cutting diagram: the two front posts stop 5.5 in under the roof line for the beam. Set them in gravel, tamped, and plumb on both faces.
Screw the two front beam boards together on edge and set them on the front post tops, screwed down through the posts.
Screw the girts between the posts, flush with the outside faces: one low, one at mid height and one just under the roof line.
Cut the plywood from the sheet layouts and screw it to the posts and girts every 6 in. The joints land on a post. Side tops are cut at 7.1°.
Cut the 3 rafters with plumb cuts at 7.1° on both ends and set one over each side wall and one at the middle back post, toe-screwed to the posts and the beam.
Lay 6 purlins flat across the rafters, then screw down the 4 metal panels, lapping one rib.
Spread 4 in of gravel inside, higher than the ground outside, so the floor drains.
Before you start
Sized for 3 adult goats or sheep at 16 sq ft of floor each, with the open side facing away from the prevailing wind.
Goats climb. Keep the lowest girt clear of the ground and add nothing a goat can stand on at the roof edge.
Add a second shelter or wall in a cold climate or for lambing and kidding. Drafts matter less than damp.
The front beam spans 7 7/8 ft on two 2x6s. Check your local snow load; in heavy-snow areas add a post at the middle of the front.
Check local rules before you build. Some places need a permit for an accessory structure of this size.
