A three-sided 12 x 20 ft gable shelter for 15 goats or sheep: ten 4x4 posts, doubled 2x6 beams, a ridge, plywood back and ends and a metal roof.

Build steps

Mark 10 post positions, five along each long side, and check square by measuring both diagonals. Dig each hole 24 in deep.
Set the posts in gravel, tamped, plumb on both faces. The tops stand 60 in above the ground.
Bolt the doubled 2x6 beams to both sides of the post tops on each long side, with the joints staggered over the posts.
Screw a 2x4 tie across the beams at the end posts and the middle, so the rafters cannot spread.
Cut the rafters with plumb cuts at 23°, screw them to the ridge board and set them on the beams at 24 in on center.
Screw the purlins flat across the rafters and then the 22 metal panels, lapping one rib.
Screw the plywood to the posts and the beam on the back wall and both gable ends. Leave the front open.
Spread 4 in of gravel inside, above the outside grade.

Before you start

Sized for 15 goats or sheep at 16 sq ft each. For a smaller flock, build the 8 x 8 ft shelter.
The open front faces south or east, away from the prevailing wind. Goats prefer to be dry, not warm.
Check the roof against local snow load. In heavy-snow areas add posts at 30 in.
A ridge cap is not in the shopping list; buy a matching metal ridge cap and flashing.
Check local rules: a 240 sq ft structure needs a permit in many places.
